Saens & Mats in Ingrish?

Due to the fact im a teacher, let's talk about teaching Maths and Science in English. It came to light weeks ago over the PPSMI, whether or not it was a wise move to have it changed from BM to BI. And you wanna know what i think? Honestly, stick the language to Bahasa. Kata cintai bahasa kita kan, so ajar la dlm BM, no?

If you asked me, the ministry should consider improving student's english FIRST before permitting English in Science and Maths. Simple English they could not understand, let alone understanding technical or jargon word of science..! The solution, begin at a very early stage of their age, say Primary 3. At least they will have clues what english is all about, before making English into science and maths.

At times, i do pity my students who are really hardworking, but having major difficulties in understanding English. They are hanged with 2 jobs simultaneously, understanding each word and understanding what it requires. Some just gave up, 'susah Miss, english pun saya tak faham, ini kan pula nak faham sains & matematik dalam english' is just among a few i heard always.

It's now being reviewed by all the so-called orang penting negara segala. Each have their own piece of idea.. tapi aku tengok lebih banyak bertekak je dlm parliement, solution takdok..Bingit telinga. Do something already okay, you people!

Benar kata ktk, susah nak ajar mun dak ya sik pandey kakar English. nak paham english gik sekian, dedek nak paham bahasa sains..tedah lok kmk dgn student kmk mpun..

that's right. focus more on improving the command of English rather than just implementing it into Science and mathematics. Teaching science and math in English is good, but we also have to consider those who are having difficulties understanding english. A good idea without a good plan is just a bad idea.

Kan?? I really pity students yang having hard time understanding english, they have the willingness to study but are often let down by the pressure to understand words in English.. sepatutnya asas English patut kuat, baruk dpt di implement ke Sains and Maths..nak ohh

Mena juak ya. Mek nengar banyak miak komplen. Tapi eh, secara peribadi mek prefer bahasa Malaysia :). Entah kenak. Kali it's just a matter of preference.

You are right at certain points Ahmoi. Still, you cant dismiss the importance of English for their own future. There are pros and cons to it

Urban students and rural students have different levels of exposure to English. To group them as having the same level of English is just pure ignorance. rural students are not weak. they are very hard-working. They only need time and good guidance to help them master the language. patience is virtue.

Aaaa....ada juak muka mek dalam ya eheheh. Ermmm try to teach the subjects using both language then. english and BM. I don't think this would be a problem :)

mm tbh, when it comes to this issue, we can only say so much. mcm kmk, my job involves giving talks on nuclear to students - both urban & rural areas. it was clear cut the urban kids wanted me to talk in english but the same cant be said to those from the rural areas. so i know first hand the difficulties teachers face when it comes to teaching these students in either bm or english. kmk nak mdh apa2 pun, kmk sik pande coz sikkan nak polah 2 syllables for rural & urban? that would be a huge hassle to the teachers. what if dakya kenak transfer? it would be troublesome for them to switch their teaching styles and whatnot. plus, if molah 2 system camtok, the kids from rural areas mesti rasa mcm kenak underestimate, makin la dakya demotivated!

but at the same time, if we were to coordinate 2-2 urban & rural makei english, it'd b hard for the rural kids. unless they do something to them, u know, like extra english classes to empower them in that language.

btw, ahaha cant imagine myself as a teacher. sedang berik ceramah ya jak pun, i felt like strangling some of the deviants. ngenang bah! haha.

u know my experience rite?we studied sci n math together in BM,siap dpt cikgu kimia gagap gik... ;-)
Then, i flew to France n work everything IN FRENCH... 100%.
Finish blaja,i come back to m'sia n work using English as main language...
To be honest,I dun see language as barriers. I worked with Vietnamese, chinese, Indians, Mexicans etc... some of them dun know a word in english... but we still can work together b'cause our technical foundation is still the same no matter in what language we learn...
So my point is... build a stable foundation first laa...in the most understandable language... kakya,tukar2 laa bahasa ke tamil pun no problem bah....

Myra: u give talk about nuclear? anything to do with N Korea or Iran?hehehehe...joking.
Ure in the team that wants to set up nuclear power station in M'sia kah?;-)

Yasser:
Yes, harus kmk benar2 bersetuju dgn ktk koh..Urban students are totally different from the rurals, how to have high expectations nak? You can obviously see a significant low grades when it comes to Sains and Maths, sedang sejarah or BM gik makey BM, dak nya boleh gagal, what more to say learning something in English!

Audio:
ktk student bah...te he he. Teaching both lingo? yoh, tedah cikgu, ney nak belajar BM, ney nak belajar BI..kat ctok, alu masuk bhs Iban juak alu..

Myra:
I wished whatever we say so much ya be heard by the ministry. Kadang kmk pelik, they always gahkan that cintai bahasa kita, but contradictorily, use English in the education System. I understand the intention is to upgrade our English level, but beginning at a very late stage umpama cuma melentur buluh yang dah keras..tbh, BM pun kadang dak nya sik lepas kat ctok, dedek nak lepas English segala sains n maths..haih!

myra said...

mos04, i dont give talks about n korea hahaha alu over excited dak ya kelak. & yes, am part of the team to set up the nuclear power station. i hope that will materialise and seriously, it's HIGH TIME the govt listens to us and tnb. like it or not, we need nuclear as our next alternative energy.

felicia, bena ya! BM gik hancor, dek2 english. benda camtok u cant do it overnite. a lot must be put into consideration. tok terus nak revamp, ne ndak miak jadi san.

f.i.e.z.a:
sik mek dpt imagine juak za..kali mun kita terkenak english, sik lah berapa susah nak, since kita dah ada foundation. miak ujung2 ceruk ya gney? kmk kdg miak nanyak eh, kdg pandey blur juak sebab sik exposed to it..tedah..

mos04:
tapi dak nya ajar ktk good foundation in French lok nak? Plus, it's a different country where by you chose it at your own will. At least they make it clear, French is compulsory and use it! berbeza dgn kita..kejap english, kejap bm..dua2 sik kukuh..bila expat dtg malaysia, di suroh study BM, sentiment tek konon..tapi kak ya everything else alu in english..apakah?

PJ Selamba:
From anyone sekali pun, kalau benda tu mcm takmasuk akal, kena dipikirkan jugak..i wont say i know deep how my students feel, tapi i know learning is not easy.

0ngg0n:
ha best best..sokong aaa.. ada benarnya point kmk nakk :)

Anuar:
iye? jgn sampai bergaduh2 la yekk..

Myra:
aok, getting them to understand, even a line is so much better than teaching them the whole entire slide but understand not any of it..bak kata org, bagus ajar slow2, ajar2 laju sikda apa masuk palak miak apa guna

I think the real issue is to build a rock solid foundation first before implementing any other actions, dont u think?

If i understand it well, we use nuclear energy to boil water..get the steam to turn the big turbine n create electricity.... MYRA,betol sik? mun salah, nampak glk kmk tgh khayal benda lain time study dlok.hahahaha...

Dimple: yalah... like i said, ajar jak sci. n math in apa2 language yg di paham miak like BM or Iban etc... sik kesah bah... once they understand the foundation, teach them english or french or spanish.. they will know sci or math in that language too...
Sometimes these politician, they put an idea for themselves...not for the students... that's politics... bila mintak feedback, smua pdah bagus,ok... mesti sokong government bah....

Anonymous said...

Myra: kmk baruk prasan yg cikgu ngajar dlm pic ya tek duhal muka ktk.hahaha...
Nway, y do we need nuclear power station?hydro station sik ckupkah? suro org m'sia tutup lampu.hehehe...
I'm not against the nuclear thing laa... it's not used as weapons... it's just the risk is too big/high. not just bcause of human factor, our weather juak... When i was in France, these things was still an issue although they have the plant a long time ago....
Come to miri, we can discuss it further...hahaha... sikda bah...
